UK National Search to Find ‘The Face of Diabetes’
LONDON, UK 14 NOVEMBER, 2008 – New worldwide research indicates that, less than 50% of type 2 diabetes patients* are achieving target long-term blood glucose measures (HbA1c)[1], and 40% of patients are experiencing diabetes complications[2]. These results are being announced in support of World Diabetes Day (WDD), an annual campaign run by the International Diabetes Federation. WDD also heralds the beginning of a national search to find ‘The Face of Diabetes’.

A breakthrough new treatment for patients experiencing Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and other macular diseases is now available at BMI Goring Hall Hospital in West Sussex. AMD is the cause of almost 50% of those registered as blind or partially sighted in the UK and a recent study has shown that 70% of patients improved vision by more that two lines on the traditional eye chart test.

BMI The Sloane Hospital, Beckenham, BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital, in Orpington and BMI Fawkham Manor Hospital, Longfield, are now making available vaccines to young women up to the age of 26 and boys up to the age of 15 seeking protection against diseases caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the sexually transmitted virus that causes genital warts, cervical cancer and other cancers of the body.
