Why is this campaign necessary? A recent survey by the Office of Fair Trading has revealed only 17% of online retailers are “fully compliant” with existing consumer regulations. Computeractive has conducted further research to reveal the numerous ways in which UK internet retailers are exploiting the gaps in the public's knowledge of their consumer rights online. Some very big names in the consumer technology market, including Apple, have been exposed as breaking the law. Key findings of Computeractive’s poll: Of 3,622 online shoppers polled: - 74% have felt fobbed off by a company when making a complaint. - 55% have been misinformed they need to return faulty goods to the manufacturer. - One in six have been charged a restocking/administration fee, this is entirely fraudulent. Campaign aims: Fair and square sets out to: - Encourage responsible retailers to sign up to a Consumer Confidence Charter, those that meet the strict criteria will be able to display a campaign logo on their websites. - Educate shoppers on their online consumer rights. - To enable consumers to express their views to the Under –Secretary of State for Trade and Consumer Affairs if they have experienced a company breaking the law online.
