The IOL VIP (intra-ocular lens for visually impaired people) system is a typically 30-minute procedure in which two small lenses are inserted into the eye. These lenses work in two ways:
• By acting in combination, they work like a miniature telescope, slightly magnifying the image to the eye
• The lenses can also divert the image from the part of the eye which is the most damaged on to a healthy adjacent part
The procedure is now available at BMI Goring Hall Hospital to appropriate patients with AMD over 55 years of age, but it is not yet available at NHS hospitals. BMI Goring Hall is the only hospital in the South East region to offer this new treatment.
“AMD is a devastating condition, which can initially cause little or no symptoms and no pain. However as it progresses it can cause a severe loss of vision, which has a huge impact on a persons’ life”, said Mr Sal Rassam, Consultant Ophthalmologist at BMI Goring Hall Hospital. “Ninety percent of people with AMD have the dry form of the disease for which there has traditionally been no effective treatment, but the IOL VIP procedure can give these patients the opportunity to carry out everyday activities most people may take for granted, such as reading, watching a film or even recognising money, all of which AMD can affect. It can also be useful for patients with other forms of macular disease.”
“It is fantastic to have this procedure now available at BMI Goring Hall Hospital, where more people in the area can now access it”, Mr Rassam added. “It is an innovative development in the field of eye surgery.”
IOL VIP is just one of a range of treatments available in the newly refurbished Ophthalmology Suite at BMI Goring Hall Hospital. The new facilities are dedicated to outpatients so that eye patients can be referred and seen on the same day five days a week. A team of six ophthalmologists, supported by two eye nurse specialists, offer screening and treatment services such as diabetic retinal screening and cyst removal, in patient friendly treatment rooms which also have wheelchair access.
“We are delighted to be offering a wider range of ophthalmology services at Goring Hall, including the latest innovative techniques and technologies, in our newly refurbished and extended Ophthalmology Suite,” said Una Palmer, Executive Director at BMI Goring Hall Hospital, “The focus on outpatient treatment and the fact that both GPs and opticians can refer to the clinic, means we can offer same day treatments as part of our commitment to excellence in medical care.”
