Over 40's Are Style Leaders
Women in their 40s are overtaking twenty-somethings in the shopping stakes, a new survey has revealed.

Thanks to a higher disposable income and greater confidence, half of over 40's women said they enjoy shopping more as they get older.

Three quarters of the 3,000 over-40s polled by Debenhams said this was because they have finally found a style they are happy with.

During her 30s the average woman finds the look that best suits her - less than a third said they were dressing to suit their body before the age of 25.

This gets even better as 54 per cent of women think you become more confident about your body and style as you get older.

More than half worry about dressing too young - but despite this 89 per cent think you can still get away with wearing trendy clothes in your later years.

A third of over 40s think skinny jeans is a trend that shouldn't be confined to young people while 20 per cent think they can still wear leggings.

Eight per cent even say you can still get away with leather trousers.

Not everyone worries about their appearance though - 14 per cent of women over 40 couldn't care less what they look like.

But not all shopping experiences are fun - 48 per cent of older ladies say they feel intimidated in some shops because of their age.

Seven per cent even say their age has even led to rude comments from shop assistants.

Almost 59 per cent of women also think there are certain shops you shouldn't go in any more once you reach a certain age.

To make it worse, more than two thirds of older women say they struggle to find shops that stock clothes for their age range.

A spokesman for Debenhams said: ''It's great to hear that women are feeling as confident shopping for clothes as they reach their 40s.

''A lot of emphasis is put on fashion for very young women but it's refreshing to learn that women in their 40's 50's and even 60's feel they're in touch with current trends.

''It's only natural to make some fashion faux pas over the years, but this survey shows most women feel that they have created their own style for themselves as they get older.''

The survey also revealed that the top style icon of women in their 40s is actress Jane Seymour.

Second place went to sexy chef Nigella Lawson followed by TV actress Amanda Redman.
